Keep the Water Flowing

Here on the farm, the need to access free flowing water is a year round necessity.  To that end, a few years ago we came up with this solution.

When the temps dip below zero, the store bought spigot covers will not do the job. The spigot will still freeze up unfortunately, we do not have a frost free spigot.

To the workshop I went and came up with the cover you see above. There is a thermal cube in the bottom of the housing that turns on a 40 watt light bulb at 35 degrees and off at 45 degrees.

This coupled with some blankets covering it will keep water flowing down to 17 degrees below zero (air temp), which is the coldest we have had since moving here.

Can Your Dog Spell?

Brandy is a very smart dog. She knows how to spell. Over the years she has come to learn certain words. So we have had to resort to spelling them out.

We started spelling food, dinner, and play, but she has now learned these words via spelling. So, we can only spell part of the word otherwise she will pick up on what we are saying. For example, for play we just say P....but we are considering converting to Spanish next, we hope she is not bilingual too!

Snow Defense

Around here, we get a lot of snow. Normally over 150 inches a year, sometimes double that amount.  When the sun comes out and heats up the barn roof just a bit, the fun begins.

The snow that so softly falls on the roof becomes an all consuming, slow wall of destruction. For the past three years running, this force has ripped down my humble smoke stack on the wood stove. Try as I may this wall just plows over all of my attempts to stop it.

Until now, I hope this snow diverter will keep the snow above the stack from sliding off the roof and taking the stack with it.

I will keep you posted.
