"Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They toil not, neither do they spin, and yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." Matthew 6:28-29
Just something to ponder as we go into the Summer...
While doing morning farm chores, I paused for a moment. To reflect on the spendor before me. As I drank this in, I remember part of a parable from Jesus,
"Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They toil not, neither do they spin, and yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." Matthew 6:28-29 Just something to ponder as we go into the Summer...

This is one of our ducks, she is trying to hatch her "bumpy eggs". How this all started was, we put some new chickens into the coop area. So we placed some golf balls in the coop to show them where to lay their eggs. Well this duck thinks she will sit on these too. If you like your hands and fingers whole do not try to take her "eggs"! FOUR!! Around here the 17 year cicadas are in full force. Walk out during the day and it sounds like an 1950's monster flick. But here on the farm we have a secret weapon. It is not some bug spray or electronic device. It is much better than that..... It is...... chickens, lots of them. They spend their days catching and eating these guys. If they get close to the ground and they are lunch. You could almost feel sorry for them, but I am not! This is a Zippo lighter, but this is not the one my Dad used for years. His was deeply engraved. In my mind I can still see it as if it was yesterday. When I was a small boy, my Dad let me refill it for him. For a five year old this was a BIG deal. I never knew what happened to that lighter. It has been lost to the sands of time. Fast forward to the present. I needed a lighter to use here on the farm. The disposable ones did not appeal to me. So I went out and purchased a Zippo. They are still made the same way and with the same craftsmanship as the first one. I did not think about it much, until I filled and lit it for the first time. ALL those wonderful memories came flooding back to me. So every once in awhile I will pull out my lighter open it and light it. For no other reason, but to remember... Recently, while reading a particular homestead magazine, we came across an article about this new thing. It called a "Solar Clothes Dryer".
Well we just HAD TO built one and what do you know what...... it WORKS!! We just wonder why no one thought of this before?? This year we tried something new with feeding the kids. Instead of feeding them several times a day. We have switched to the "Cold Milk" Method . It more closely emulates being dam raised. When dam raised, the kids eat throughout the day in small drinks. The dam only has so much milk at any one time. So the kids are regulated in how much they can drink and a sitting. Here because we bottle raise them they have all the milk they want, but the milk is ICE COLD! So try as they may, they can only drink a small amount before "Brain Freeze" kicks in and they have to stop drinking. With this method the kids are more content and put on more weight and grow faster.
