This is Flint, who was our newest addition to the farm until about a hour ago.

He was born on Friday (4/22) at 4:40 pm. We had been watching Ember, his dam during the day via the camera. As the day drew to a close we saw she was thinking about it. I was enroute, but Michelle was closer. She ran home, looked and got things ready. As I came up the driveway. I was taking my time... until Michelle gave me the "GET UP HERE NOW!!!" gesture. I put the petal to the metal, spraying rocks and dust every which way. I jumped from the car and ran up to see two hooves showing. I got down to hold Ember and Michelle proceed to deliver the 9.6 pound buckling.

Here is a picture of him the next day in the baby goat tote.

This is Snickers, she was born close to full term (146 days) but developmentally she was a week early (139 days).  Which meant we had to give her around the clock care for those first few days.  Many kids in her condition die, so the Lord blessed us greatly!  She was 5.6lbs at birth (usual weight is close to 10lbs), and she did not have any teeth erupted yet.

She is doing well (just a little over 20lbs), but is still a bit small to go out with the "Big Kids" so she gets to go back for supervised visits with the other kids until she is big enough to stay with them.

This is a shot of her coming back from a night visit.

The Good Shepherd

Well you are probably wondering what a duck has to do with being a shepherd??

Let me explain it to you. This is a picture of Alice, one of our original ducks on the farm. Alice waddles to her own beat. To that end she does not always come off the pond at dusk. She is just enjoying herself and does not want to come back to the security and warmth of the coop area. Last night was one of those nights, try as we may she would not come off the pond. As we did our evening chores we checked on her. She would not budge from the pond. As we finished for the night, the temps dropped and the snow flew. In the morning I looked out to see it snowed a bit overnight, the temps had really dropped and the wind was now howling.  I got dressed to tend the rest of the flock then go up and find if Alice had survived the night and see if I could now persuade her to come back down. As I put down the feed bucket to unlock their coop area, there was Alice gulping down feed from the bucket. She had come down during the wee hours of the morning. After she ate her fill, I lovingly picked her up and placed her into the coop. The weather was much too harsh to let them out today.

As I write this, I am reminded of the parable Jesus told of the Good Shepherd, who left the 99 sheep to search for the one lost sheep. When the shepherd found the lost one, how he rejoiced! It gives us a small glimpse of how our Heavenly Father rejoices when one of his lost ones is found!

Long johns?!?!......In April??????

Yesterday......aaaahhhh

Today....buuuurrrrrrrh
Well......by the good old calendar today is April 3rd.

It has already hit 80 degrees this season.

Yesterday the sun was out, the birds were singing, and the grass was green.

Contrast that with today......

I was shoveling 5 inches of snow off the steps and clearing a place to give the ducks and chickens their morning feed. I had long johns on, two coats, a wool hat, and snow boots. By the time morning chores were done, my feet were numb and my hands were aching. I just had to suck it up, this is farm life in the mountains!
