...Then the day came for our new hens to arrive...
Michelle started putting the hens into their area. After she had unloaded the first ten hens the boys realized that they saw GIRLS!!! They have not been moping around since!
Recently we picked up four young rosters. They were for the 20 new laying hens that we are got. These guys were from a friend of ours. They were loving life surrounded by lots of hens. Until they moved here and found themselves in solitary......they just moped around as they saw hens running around free in the other areas. ...Then the day came for our new hens to arrive... A few weeks ago Michelle and I were mucking, i.e. "cleaning out" the bucks barn. We would load up a cart with several hundred pounds of manure/hay and I would haul it over to the compost pile on the other side of the farm. Due to the weight, I go down the steep hill from the barn in low gear and let the engine slow my descent down the hill. Well.... this time I had unknowingly slipped the tractor almost out of gear. So as I went down the hill and hit the first bump it went completely out of gear. When I hit the steepest part of the hill I was free wheeling and gaining speed.......fast. It took a second to realize what was wrong and hit the brakes. The wheels locked up but the load would have none of that, I skidded to a stop at the bottom of the hill. Shaken, but otherwise OK and thanking THE LORD I did not jack knife on the way down. So call me a big sissie, I love BRAKES!! It is 11am, do I know where my duck is?????
Apparently not! I am at work and getting ready for lunch. My phone rings, it is the neighbor from across the road. She calmly asked if we are home, I tell her no and ask her what is up. She informs me that there is a duck in her front yard and she thinks is is one of ours. I hang up with her and call Michelle and ask her if she can get home......Neither of us are able to leave work. I call our neighbor back and tell her we will chase it back when we get home. Upon my arrival I do a head count and find our wayward duck has flown home. Nothing interesting to see on the other side of the road! He is now be given the prize for flying the coop.....a wing trim! |
