It has been a few years since we first wrote about a farmer's life. A lot has changed, yet much has stayed the same. It is a hard life we live, non-farmers just do not understand why we do it. It is a choice, a lifestyle, and a deep, deep commitment. There are no days off, no skipping on tending livestock because it is too cold or too hot. Caring for the animals must be completed every morning and evening, their very lives are in our hands.
We are there when they enter the world and we are the one's who must decide their fate when the time comes to let them go. Whether to another farm, or from the bondage and pain of this life.
When you help bring them into the world and then care for them a bond forms. It is a much different bond then you may have with a beloved pet. Just because they are here for a purpose we take our responsibility to care for them very seriously. It is a duty we do not take lightly, when their time draws to to close on the farm, there is always sadness, tempered with the knowledge that they lived well here.
When death gets easy or does not bother us is the day we will give up the farm!
