With a break in the winter weather, I took the opportunity to turn the compost pile, the chickens had other ideas. You see, a chicken's day is all about finding food. We feed them well, but this does not stop them from looking for "Good Eats". So as I use the tractor to turn the pile, they swoop in, try as I may they will not leave. To the point that as I lift a bucket of compost a chicken hops up for the ride. You can yell and beep your horn but they pay you no mind. They are on a mission, come you know what or high water they will pursue their goal, a tasty titbit.
So, just stay out of their way....even if you have a 3 ton tractor with a bucket holding about 700lbs of compost.
