A Wise Man......Looks Up

This is a picture after the overhang of snow let go.

I heard a wise man once say that....

...."One should always look up before knocking snow off of bucket"....

Well I did not, I was just going over to the doorway to knock off some snow from the bottom of a bucket. After the first hit I heard a whoosh and then everything went white as a load of snow came down from the roof and onto my head. I had to then finish my morning chores covered in snow.

SO Close But Yet SO Far!

That small building in the picture is our "Hay Hut" This is where we store hay for the goats for everyday feeding.

In the winter most but not all the snow and ice melts after each storm. There is one very special piece of real estate that does not get the winter sun, hence it does not melt. The approach to the hay hut. Do not let this picture fool you that is sheet ice under that thin veil of snow. So how do you get a four ton tractor up this hill and across to the hut without taking it sideways down the hill??

First and foremost PRAYER! Then lots of sand. Last time we did it (3 weeks after Jonas) Michelle took several attempts to first get up the hill and then she inched over to the hut as I spread sand under her tires while she creeped along. To say we were relieved when the tractor was back down the hill was a understatement!

How Do You Eat an Elephant??

I know this is a little late....but this is what Winter Storm Jonas gave us!

Most of you have heard the expression "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!

Well that is how we dug out from the blizzard. On the right, is a picture of the path to the tractor barn. It took two days to get here. First we had to dig out all the livestock, some were entombed in their shelters. With God's Grace we did not lose a one!

On day two, we started to dig a path to the tractor barn. Once there, we got out the trusty snow blower and cleared a path for the tractor. The snow was so deep (3 feet) there was no place for the tractor to dump it. So the snow blower was the best option.

Home is Where the Goat is?!

This is a picture of one of our buck barn. It is not too large so the goats themselves heat the barn. They have plenty of food and water inside. So on deep cold nights after they get their bellies full of hay and feed they all curl up together. Snug as stinky bugs in a rug.

Goat Traffic Jam!

Goats are by nature a very curious lot. They are very nosey! Think of a 150lb cat that eats hay and you have a goat.  They want to know what you are doing and always come over to "assist you". It does not matter how flustered you get, they stick to you like glue.

When we had to clear paths out to all the barns after Jonas (36 inches of snow) they were there...tasting the shovel or your coat.....if that got too boring they would head butt each other and collapse the trail that was just cleared. When it was time to head back, the problem started!
