Summer Time Treat

Recently, we have been having some hot days. Besides going out and checking on everyone we have been giving them a special treat during the heat of the day. We place a watermelon into the refrigerator to get it nice and cold, then slice it up for all to enjoy.

Have You Petted Your Duck Today?

This is one of our "Broody Ducks", she has been sitting on her nest for most of the summer. To her credit, she is one of our best sitters. When we have let her sit, she hatched out all her eggs and was an excellent mother.

This year we do not need any ducks. So I go in every night and collect any duck or chicken eggs from under her. She always pecks at me a bit for taking her eggs. I tell her it is OK and try to give her a quick pet to calm her down.

Over time something happened, I get the eggs and give her pet, slowly she has started to realize that pets are nice. After pecking at me for getting eggs, she turns her head so I can pet her. She seems to enjoy the attention each night and only gives a token peck when I get the eggs. I have no idea how this will play out when she goes off the nest for the winter. But, we will wait and see.

Sneaky Dog

This is a picture of our dog Brandy, to the untrained eye it looks like she is just enjoying laying in the sun.

But...this all part of her plan. You see, we gave milk to the chickens a few minutes ago. She saw us take it out to them.

So...she is going to play, "sleeping in the sun", until we leave. Then she will get up and go for the milk. If we let her, she would drink till she got sick. So when the chickens get milk we keep a close eye on sneaky dog!
