Since I took off today to rest from the trip to NJ and Dad’s funeral; I had a moment to look outside. The sun was up, but the fog was still in the valley. It laid there like white milk in a bowl. A small “island” of green rose up from the fog. I have seen this countless times in the mornings. But today; this was awe inspiring in it’s sheer beauty. I so longed to take a picture of it but I knew that a mere camera could not do justice to what my eyes had seen. To photograph it would be like my trying to copy a painting of one of the great masters of the past. So I just stood there and drank in deep the view and thanked the Lord for His wonderful creation!

On days we are home and can let out the ducks and chickens they will go out and forage in the morning. As the day heats up they retire to the shade to stay cool as best as they can during the day. About two hours before sunset, most days, the heat breaks and the air cools. Out come the chickens and ducks again to forage for food. Also the goats appear from the barn and run and jump in the pasture. This time of day it is very peaceful as the work of the day is done and we get ready for the coming nightfall. It reminds me of what is told in the Bible , that in the cool of the day before the fall God would walk with Adam and would fellowship with him. In a small way we take a moment to pause and fellowship with the Lord about our day and the wonder of his creation.

As Michelle was milking the goats tonight, I in turn took each of the adult goats for a walk. They walk like a dog and enjoy getting out of their fenced pasture. Further, I like to see what plants they care to eat so we may introduce them into their area. Also this is “free” food so we try to fill them up with this before giving them hay we have to pay money for in the evenings. They are just so deer-like taking a bite here and there. They will not graze like cattle or sheep and are much easier on the land because of it.
The kids have collars but have not been on a leash yet. I took them around the pasture to see how they would do with the leash. To say they were not happy was a gross understatement! They dug their hooves in and pulled back and said no I am not going anywhere with you. So plan b pick them up and carry them into the pasture this just changed the location but not their attitude. We will need to work on this some more! Well, Plan C v.2 worked!
Plan A Hang up fly strips, got loaded and still had flies! Plan B Get fly traps; worked but still had flies! Plan C Get duck, put in barn area to eat flies! Little brown was caught and placed in area; in 5 minutes, said duck braved 9000 volts of electric wire and escaped area! Note goats (or humans) will not cross the wire! Plan C v.2 Get Alice, the duck, and place her in area, as of yet plan C 2 is working, she is eating flies and enjoying herself! We hope we do not need Plan C 3 or Plan D we will keep you posted! Hello All,
For those of you who did not know I used to call my Dad each week to keep him updated about farm. With his passing Michelle and I decided to start a blog in his memory to let everyone know what is been happening on the farm. We will still send out pictures two to three times a month, but here we will post updates about the farm like I used to do for my Dad! God Bless you all! Peter & Michelle |
